According to Statistics Canada, workplace violence has increased nearly 40% in ten years. An estimated 356,000 violent incidents took place in 2004, of which 71% of them occurred in the workplace. Violence that occurs in the workplace is often perceived as an event that involves a physical altercation; however, workplace violence has broadened to include a situation that is verbal, written or progressing over time. It can also include harassment, threatening behaviour and incidents that do not necessarily occur in the traditional workplace.

This course is designed to help identify and assess the risk of violence in the workplace, and provide a guideline for developing preventative strategies to reduce workplace violence occurrences.
The content includes:

  • Definitions and legislation related to both workplace harassment and workplace violence
  • Strategies to address harassment in the workplace
  • Various types of workplace violence
  • The impact of violence in the workplace
  • Employers’ legal roles and responsibilities
  • Conducting a risk assessment for workplace violence hazards
  • Developing a plan to apply control measures to prevent or reduce workplace violence hazards
  • Domestic violence in the workplace – what it is and steps to help minimize the risk
  • Work refusals – as it relates to workplace violence

This course is also available as Workplace Violence Training for Supervisors and JHSC Members (Nationwide)
